This project arises from the need to create a scientific base for the contributions and publications of the botanist and pharmacist from Artà, Don Llorenç Garcias i Font. Its objective is not only to inventory Don Llorenç’s work, but also to include it as scientific support for the coming editions of the “La Ciència a Les Illes Balears” Collection (UIB). The Botanic garden is also planning to publish a notebook in his memory in the style of those already issued for Anthony Bonner and Father Francesc Bonafé Barceló.
The documentary legacy of Don Llorenç Garcias i Font has been preserved in perfect condition thanks to its current owner, Don Joan Garcias i Truyols, who has maintained it exactly as his grandfather classified it. There are some 1,500 documents to inventory, among which we find the following sections:
- Correspondence (C): preserved letters. This section includes the creation of a national (intellectuals from Barcelona and Mallorca) and international network of contacts between scientists with a manifest collaborative and revisionist attitude. It also includes the following subsections: Natural History, Archaeology, Linguistic Policy, Bibliography and Personal Items.
- Campaign or scientific notebooks (QC): notes on botanical and zoological discoveries (taxonomy), including his outstanding observations of the evolution of nature in Mallorca.
- Publications.
- Personal papers (D, diverse): contracts, invoices, identity cards, diplomas.
